چکیده
The present work presents focuses on the use of different admixtures for development rendering lime-based mortars with improved adhesion and durability, as well reduction cracking. To this aim, combinations an improver (ethylene–vinyl acetate copolymer, EVA), a water repellent agent (sodium oleate), viscosity enhancer (a starch derivative) mineral admixture (pozzolanic addition nanosilica or metakaolin) were tested. renders applied four substrates (sandstone, limestone, granite brick) to assess their performance. influence admixtures’ combination fluidity, stiffening time, adhesion, cracking, compressive strength, pore structure, frost resistance durability against magnesium sulfate attack was evaluated. EVA seen enhance when used in oleate, metakaolin starch. This also led minimized Opposite trends between cracking observed function porosity presence small-sized capillary pores. interferences carbonation accounted drops strength nanosilica-free tested renders; nanosilica-containing showed good performance, due filling effect C-S-H formation. most clearly renders, face freezing-thawing cycles attack, proving applicability these repair works Cultural Heritage new Civil Engineering applications.

Experimental testing of the durability of lime-based mortars used for rendering historic buildings
To find out which render mortar mix shows the best durability properties, we have designed four ageing tests that aim to simulate water movements, ice formation and salt crystallization in lime mortars exposed to an extreme, but realistic, range of temperature and humidity. It has been found that the response of individual mortar mixes differs according to the mechanism and the agent of attack....
متن کاملQuantifying the benefits of lime additions in cement based mortars
The European Lime Association (EuLA) have instigated a project to identify and quantify the benefits associated with the addition of hydrated lime to cement based mortars, and more importantly, filling the gaps that exist in the evidence in respect of the benefits of hydrated lime additions to workability, bond strength development, durability and in addition the modes of failure of mortars whn...
متن کاملAn assessment of lime mortars for masonry repair
Most historic and traditional mortars were made with lime. Due to their nature and function lime mortars weather and need to be replaced. Ordinary portland cement mortars can often be incompatible with historic masonry causing structural and aesthetic damage. Petrographic analysis of original mortars from Clonmacnoise Monastery and Ardamullivan Castle evidenced that they were fabricated with fe...
متن کاملBehaviour of a starch as a viscosity modifier for aerial lime-based mortars
Different dosages of a commercialized potato starch were added to aerial lime-based mortars in order to check its efficiency as a rheological modifier. Several fresh state properties of the mortars were studied: consistency, density, air content, water retention capacity, setting time and evolution when applied on support. The effect of the starch on -potential of the lime particle surface as ...
متن کاملInfluence of curing conditions in air lime-metakaolin blended mortars – A mineralogical and mechanical study
The need to formulate mortar compositions with adequate durability and compatibility is nowadays one of the major challenges in historical buildings repair. The incorporation of pozzolanic materials as addition or replacement of lime is viewed as a solution to these challenges regarding the increase in hardening time, mechanical strength, water resistance and durability. This paper includes par...
